Recal Unveils Breathwork Training Program to Prepare Anyone – From Any Elevation – for High Altitude Expeditions

Recal Travel, a leader in breathwork-based coaching and adventure travel, has announced the launch of its groundbreaking program designed to equip anyone, even those that live at sea-level, with the tools needed for high altitude expeditions. With Recal's innovative High Altitude Breathwork Training, athletes, both recreational and professional, can now more effectively – and naturally – train to not only perform better on the mountain, but more safely navigate the challenges at altitude.

The 5-week program, which is available in three formats (a PDF-only version for $75, an online version with instructional videos, demos, and other content for $275, and a personal coaching version for $875), is a game-changer for adventurers of all types gearing up for mountainous expeditions. Developed by experts and backed by published scientific research, the training should begin about five weeks before the individual is set to arrive at “high altitude,” defined, generally, as anything above 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) of elevation.

"Many people underestimate the impact that altitude will have on their trek, climbing expedition, or endurance event in mountain running or ski mountaineering," says Anthony Lorubbio, founder of Recal. "Our goal is to revolutionize the way people prepare for high altitude adventures, regardless of where they live. Multiple years in the making, we’re thrilled to release our High Altitude Breathwork Training to the world so that anyone can supplement their training plan with breathwork in preparation for these challenging environments."

The program leverages cutting-edge breathwork techniques, many of which are part of published research in scientific journals, to simulate high altitude conditions and initiate physiological adaptations. Participants train using exercises to improve their oxygen uptake capacity (VO2 Max) by creating new red blood cells, increase their CO2 tolerance to feel less breathless and keep breathing controlled and efficient, and build resilience to maintain mental acuity while at altitude. Additionally, there is a strong focus on respiratory muscle strength training, in particular the diaphragm and intercostal muscles to combat the thinner, lower-density air at altitude. By incorporating breathwork exercises into a pre-acclimatization training regimen, participants can minimize the risk of altitude-related issues and optimize their performance – as well as safety – in high altitude environments. To this point, Lorubbio adds, “This is not a replacement for acclimatization on the mountain itself; it is designed to be used as part of a larger pre-acclimatization block of training, or the final ~5 weeks before their challenge. We’ve seen great results with our clients, athletes, and guides when used in this way.”

Recal's program is tailored to meet the needs of adventurers at any fitness level. Whether preparing for a trek to Everest Base Camp, Nepal, a summit attempt on Kilimanjaro, Africa, or hiking a 14,000-foot peak in Colorado, USA, participants can benefit from Recal's expertise and guidance every step of the way. “Of all the challenges on that mountain, I didn’t have one issue with the altitude or my breathing,” notes Ron Hill, a recent trainee in preparation for a climb of Mt. Cotopaxi (19,350ft / 5,900m) in Ecuador.  “This training had prepared me to oxygenate my body and stay mentally sharp as I rose in altitude.”

Below are testimonials from participants that highlight the transformative impact of the training:

“The breathwork training was a game-changer for my trip to Nepal. I never at any time had an issue with breathing, oxygen saturation levels, or mental acuity. I have since incorporated more breathwork into my own fitness training back home.”

    — Chris M, Founder, NoQuit Fit - from Minnesota, USA, to Everest Base Camp, Nepal, Oct 2022

“While guiding climbers who had recently trained using Recal’s program, I was surprised at how well they managed the altitude – and moved quite fast for being at 5,000 meters (16,400ft) – after not having been at any altitude for months prior. Using pulse oximeters, we monitored their hypoxic levels and they remained in good condition. It was apparent the training had resulted in an increased oxygen uptake capacity. I saw first-hand how the training translated to the mountain and was pleasantly surprised.”

    — Dr. Raymundo G, MD, IFMGA - Pico de Orizaba (Citlaltépetl), Mexico, December 2023

“Of the challenges on that mountain, there was not one issue with altitude or my breath.  My training had prepared me to oxygenate myself as I rose in altitude.  I am so grateful for how this experience has changed my confidence with altitude and the power of my breath.”

    — Ron H, Conscious Leaders Quest - from Kansas, USA, to Mt. Cotopaxi, Ecuador, March 2024
