Official Statement to all global partners from Bruno Wendling, President of the Mato Grosso do Sul Tourism Foundation (Fundtur-MS).
I would like to inform you that the State Government is taking all necessary and urgent measures to minimize the impact of the drought season, which consequently increases the occurrence of wildfires in the Pantanal region, particularly in the northwest part of the state. Unfortunately, the risks and likelihood of fires are a reality during this dry period as nature takes its course.
Last Monday, June 24, the Government of Mato Grosso do Sul declared a state of emergency in the municipalities affected by the wildfires. This decree is a crucial step to ensure a rapid and effective response from the teams directly combating the fire outbreaks. Additionally, the decree facilitates access to extraordinary and necessary resources to tackle this challenging situation.
It is important to highlight that in the lodges of the Pantanal, especially in the municipalities of Aquidauana and Miranda, where safaris are conducted, there is no presence of fire or smoke. Bonito, a prominent tourist destination located 400 kilometers from Corumbá, continues its tourist activities as usual, unaffected by the fires.
Camilla Coelho from Fazenda San Francisco notes that there are no wildfire outbreaks on her property and surroundings, and they are well-prepared to act if the situation changes.
Cristina Colin from Caiman Ranch clarifies that there were some fire outbreaks in their region, but since the ranch area is quite extensive—53 thousand hectares—they were far from the sightseeing and accommodation areas and did not pose any risk to visitors and staff, so they maintained their regular schedule. These outbreaks have already been contained and are under constant monitoring to ensure they do not reignite. "Our continuous work on fire prevention remains active throughout the year, with actions developed in collaboration with specialists, which include a series of measures such as creating firebreaks and monitoring indices like rainfall," Cristina emphasizes.
Gian Valias also explains that “the Amolar Experience is a program by the Instituto Homem Pantaneiro, which develops tourist activities in the Serra do Amolar region, municipality of Corumbá, with the aim of financing preservation programs and training the riverside population for these activities, important actions for preventing situations like the current fire situation.” They hosted groups last week and will host more next week. Gian reaffirms that they are constantly monitoring the situation and prioritizing the safety of tourists.
We strongly recommend that operators, travel agents, and tourists contact the hotel properties directly before making any changes to their travel plans. Do not make decisions based on third-party information. Seek updated data directly from the lodges, hotel boats, and hotels in the region.
We are available for any additional clarifications and to offer all necessary assistance. We appreciate your support, understanding, and cooperation during this challenging period and reiterate our commitment to the safety and well-being of all visitors and residents in the region.
