Awards Bestowed Upon Travel Companies Exhibiting Excellence in Social and Environmental Responsibility
New York, NY — Condé Nast Traveler, one of the most trusted names in travel, named Lindblad Expeditions a 2013 World Savers Award winner. Renowned for their extraordinary small ship voyages to some of the world's most remote and fascinating places in alliance with National Geographic, Lindblad received the “Doing it All” award for their “Funding Conservation Research and Educating Passengers.”
As partners in exploration, conservation, and education, Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic work collaboratively through the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic (LEX-NG) Fund to support initiatives around the world, with a special focus on the regions they explore. Raising more than $10 million in partnership with their guests since Lindblad began conservation efforts in 1997, initiatives supported by the LEX-NG Fund include wildlife-monitoring projects, such as tagging killer whales in the Antarctic; educational programs with local teachers and students in the Galápagos, and joining an international effort to help native sea birds in one of the largest rodent-eradication projects in the world, on South Georgia Island in the Atlantic Ocean.
“We are honored to receive this recognition from Condé Nast Traveler,” said Amy Berquist, Director of Conservation & Strategic Initiatives for Lindblad Expeditions. “Our global stewardship efforts reflect one of Lindblad’s core values. This deep commitment to the places we travel – and the people and wildlife we encounter along the way – is a promise to our guests, and a key reason why many of our staff choose to work aboard the fleet.”
In its seventh year, applications for the coveted World Savers Awards were accepted in eight sectors and assessed in five areas: Education Programs, Environmental and Cultural Preservation, Health Initiatives, Poverty Relief, and Wildlife Conservation. Condé Nast Traveler bestowed awards on 14 top travel companies for exceptional achievement in social and environmental responsibility. The panel of judges included: Jeffrey Sachs (The Earth Institute), Laurie David (producer of An Inconvenient Truth), Olivia Wilde (Artists for Peace and Justice), David Alport (UN Special Envoy and MDG Health Alliance), Luigi Cabrini (UNWTO’s Sustainable Development of Tourism), and Dorinda Elliott (Condé Nast Traveler).
Lindblad Expeditions was also honored in 2011 with a World Savers Award for Wildlife Conservation.
